Description

Rat Liver Cells are primary cells isolated from the hepatic tissue of healthy rats and represent a heterogeneous population that may include hepatocytes, Kupffer cells, sinusoidal endothelial cells, and hepatic stellate cells, depending on isolation protocol. These cells exhibit strong adherence properties and form distinct morphologies reflective of their respective roles in liver function. Hepatocyte-rich preparations typically display polygonal morphology with binucleation and express key liver-specific markers such as albumin, cytochrome P450 enzymes (e.g., CYP3A1, CYP2E1), and alpha-1 antitrypsin. These cells retain essential metabolic functions such as urea production, xenobiotic metabolism, and lipid homeostasis. For optimal performance and to preserve metabolic capacity, repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. The cells undergo rigorous screening and isolation procedures, and are rigorously tested to ensure they are free of contamination from Mycoplasma, Fungi, Yeast, and Bacteria.

Application

  • Rat Liver Cells are widely used in toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and liver disease research. They serve as a benchmark in vitro model for assessing hepatic drug metabolism, toxicity, and enzyme induction. These cells are also essential in studying non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), fibrosis, and liver regeneration. Researchers use them in mono- or co-culture systems to assess cell-cell interactions and recreate hepatic microenvironments for disease modeling, drug testing, and mechanistic studies.
