Genetic disorders are conditions caused by alterations in DNA, which can be inherited or arise spontaneously (de novo). These DNA changes disrupt normal gene function, potentially leading to a wide range of physiological and developmental problems. The effects of genetic disorders can range from mild to severe and sometimes irreversible. Genetic disorders are broadly categorized into monogenic diseases, chromosomal aneuploidies, and multifactorial disorders. Monogenic disorders result from a mutation in a single gene locus. Examples include cystic fibrosis, hemophilia A, sickle cell disease, and duchenne muscular dystrophy. Chromosomal aneuploidies arise from numerical or structural abnormalities. For instance, down syndrome, the most common viable autosomal aneuploidy, is characterized by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21, Mosaicism, Translocation) resulting in intellectual disability and multiorgan anomalies. Multifactorial disorders, also known as complex disorders, arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, typified by hereditary cancers and metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.
